Working Remotely: 4 Tips on Gaining Visibility
Working remotely can be fun and extremely beneficial to both the employee and the company. However, having doubts and unusual problems is also commonly experienced, such as getting the feeling of anxiety pertaining to being isolated or unseen. For instance, the thoughts of missing something important or worrying if people are thinking if you’re actually working is hardly surprising.
Nevertheless, it’s not uncommon. And if you’re one of them, you’re not alone. A 2018 survey from LinkedIn showed that 37% of employees from companies that allow remote work believe that this working method makes it hard for them to gain visibility.
The following is a list that could help you be more visible at your company.
- Invite your colleagues for video calls
Partaking in video calls with your coworkers regularly can help you build a stronger relationship with them. Here in Klaiya Digital Solution ever since we started the remote set up, everyone is required to join a virtual morning huddle. Department leaders also conduct surprise video calls every morning and every afternoon everyday. More often than not, we talk and play some virtual games. This helps us create a stronger connection to everyone and bring a sense of unity to the team.
- Communicate with your coworkers through your company’s preferred messaging app
Aside from participating in video calls with your colleagues, it’s also helpful to talk to them through your company’s messaging app such as Viber, Facebook Messenger, WeChat, or DingTalk (this App is what we commonly use here in Klaiya.)
Having formal or informal channels where you can stay connected and interact with your coworkers will help you gain visibility as you are engaging with them, even when you’re not physically present.
- Share your victories and defeats with your team
When you work remotely, you want to make sure that your supervisor and your team knows what you’re up to. Because you’re not physically there with them, you have to regularly fill them in on your development — and at the same time, ensure that your work is not overlooked and disregarded.
By doing this, your bond with your teammates and colleagues will grow. Knowing that you’ve made a client happy, makes them happy as well. Remember, your wins are their wins too.
- Be involved during discussions in team video calls
Another way to gain visibility is to be involved during team meetings. When given the chance, don’t hesitate to voice out your opinions and provide your insight.
Try to ask at least one question as well, as this will help you make a connection and overall give you leverage to communicate better with your team.
Although gaining visibility when working remotely is challenging, it can be extremely beneficial to your success and career. Always take notes to connect with your teammates when possible. Going remote and gaining visibility takes more than conscious effort and planning, but there is always a way you can make yourself seen.
